Will Chiropractic Care Help Me Sleep?

A good night's sleep is vital for your overall health, and chiropractic care is one tool you can use to help improve the quality of your sleep.

Quality sleep is about more than sleeping the right number of hours every night. It is about the quality of sleep you are getting.

Are you waking up every few hours? Are you tossing and turning? Do you wake up feeling just as tired as when you went to sleep?

If you have answered yes to the above questions, you are not getting a good night's sleep, even if you sleep 7-9 hours every night. Poor quality sleep robs you of the healing that happens when you sleep. Luckily, chiropractic care can help improve your quality of sleep.

Help Your Body Relax

Muscle tension can cause pain and make it harder for you to stay asleep. Conditions such as restless leg syndrome can also make getting the sleep you need difficult.

Spinal adjustments to your back and neck can be helpful in addressing muscle tension and helping your body relax. Specifically, adjusting the C1 bone can help increase oxygen delivery to the brain, helping to improve the quality of your sleep.

Spinal adjustments can help enhance overall blood circulation in the body, reducing muscle tension and stress and improving your quality of sleep.

Ensure a Well-Functioning Central Nervous System

Chiropractic treatment can offer numerous advantages to the functioning of the nervous system and its communication. In particular, it is able to activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System and regulate the Central Nervous System, which can lead to improved sleep quality.

A properly functioning parasympathetic nervous system (PSN) can enable you to sleep more soundly by promoting the production of rest and relaxation hormones. This can help counteract stress hormones that can disrupt your sleep.

All in all, ensuring that your PNS is working optimally for good quality sleep is important.

Exercise Suggestions

Your daytime routine impacts your quality of sleep. Being active during the day is known to help improve the quality of your sleep. That is why it is so important to exercise daily in order to sleep well.

At Lotus Chiropractic Care, we guide our patients through a few straightforward relaxation techniques and stretching exercises to alleviate any strain on the muscles. We also teach you how to breathe correctly.

We will provide you with postural exercises you can easily complete at home. These exercises will help improve your quality of sleep.

Sleeping Recommendations

It is important to evaluate your sleeping conditions. How you sleep – on your back, side, or stomach – can impact your sleep quality. Also, what you sleep on, such as your pillow and mattress, can also impact your sleep quality.

Are you a stomach sleeper? If so, it may be time to reconsider your sleeping position. Sleeping on your stomach should be avoided if possible.

Sleeping on your stomach forces the neck to remain turned to the side for hours, creating kinks and twists in the spine. This impacts the structural integrity of your spine, causing stress to the central nervous system and resulting in misalignment or abnormal curves in your spine.

When choosing a mattress, look for one that is medium-firm. A medium-firm mattress provides your spine with the support that it needs. Extra soft mattresses may feel cushy, but they allow the spine to shift too much and are not good for your overall health.

when choosing a pillow, choose a medium firm pillow as well. a medium-firm pillow keeps your head and neck in the proper alignment while you are sleeping. This will help avoid strain on your neck and help ensure that you get a good night's sleep.
