Chiropractic Care for Maigne’s Syndrome

Maigne’s syndrome, also known as thoracolumbar junction syndrome, is a relatively common spinal disorder that can be treated through gentle chiropractic care.

It is primarily caused by joint degeneration and impacts the area connecting the mid and lower spine. This condition can put a lot of pressure on your blood vessels and nerves and can result in serious quality of life issues.

Maigne’s syndrome is an elusive condition usually associated with lower back pain. It is a commonly overlooked spinal condition. This is because the symptoms associated with Maigne’s are often “referred” pain.

That means that the symptoms are not directly connected to the source of the issue. Instead, you feel the pain elsewhere in the body, such as the hips, groin, or thighs, instead of the back.

Common Symptoms of Maigne’s Syndrome

The most common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the groin or genitals
  • Pain in the pubic bone (forward-facing part of the pelvis)
  • Lumbosacral pain (lower back and back of the pelvis)
  • Lower back pain
  • Lower abdominal pain
  • Headaches
  • Pain in hips, legs, and buttocks

The various sources of pain associated with Maigne’s syndrome are because the pain stems from a major nerve in your spine, the dorsal ramus. This nerve can become twisted or pinched and even wrap around bones or muscles, resulting in painful inflammation and pain in different parts of your body.

Causes of Maigne’s Syndrome

The exact causes of Maigne’s syndrome are not fully understood. It is often misdiagnosed because it presents as lower back pain that radiates pain throughout the lumbar and hip regions.

However, it is often associated with an injury from a car accident or sports injury. It is also a risk associated with back surgery. Spinal instability and joint degeneration are two additional issues that may contribute to the development of Maigne’s syndrome.

Maigne’s syndrome can be difficult to diagnose for people unfamiliar with it; however, Dr. Desai is familiar with Maigne’s syndrome and is skilled at diagnosing and treating it.

Treating Maigne’s Syndrome

Maigne’s syndrome is diagnosed by fully understanding your symptoms and using imaging to understand what is happening with your body. Dr. Desai uses a variety of gentle chiropractic techniques to help deal with the source of the issue at the thoracolumbar junction.

One technique Dr. Desai finds really useful is the Activator method, which involves the use of a small, hand-held instrument to deliver precise and gentle adjustments to the spine.
