NUCCA Technique

NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) is a highly specialized, gentle, and effective method of chiropractic care. It has been developed over five decades with research and clinical observations that focus on the correction of misalignments in the upper cervical spine (neck area).

The NUCCA method is a non-invasive treatment that uses X-rays to measure the cervical misalignment. These measurements help identify and correct misalignments and encourage optimal spinal health.

NUCCA treatment aims to restore balance to the central nervous system, which controls all functions in the body.

How the NUCCA Technique Works

The NUCCA technique is focused on the correct alignment of the head and neck. The method takes into account the biomechanics of the upper cervical spine or neck area and studies its influence on the central nervous system and brain stem function.

At Lotus Chiropractic Care, Dr. Tanvi Desai uses gentle, non-invasive adjustments to restore the proper alignment of the neck. This is achieved using gentle and subtle pressure to adjust the cervical spine carefully.

There is no pulling, twisting, or abrupt motion involved during treatment, and the correction is usually completed in a few minutes. Dr. Desai uses the technique with her patients to reduce pressure on the nervous system and allow the body to heal itself.

She uses precise measurements and gentle adjustments to correct misalignments in the upper neck. The procedure is non-invasive and involves no twisting or cracking of the neck.

Focus on the Cervical Spine

The cervical spine plays a crucial role in the functioning of your entire body. It primarily protects the brain stem that connects your brain to your central nervous system (CNS). Its close association with the brain stem means that misalignments in the cervical spine region can cause a wide range of issues, such as

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Sinus issues
  • Vertigo
  • Seizures
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems
  • Fatigue
  • Sight and hearing issues
  • Immune system problems
  • Pain and stiffness in the neck
  • Chronic illness
  • Scoliosis

Since the cervical spine influences the alignment of the entire spine, making corrections in this region can effectively heal many related symptoms.

Ideal Candidate for NUCCA

NUCCA care benefits people of all ages and can help alleviate a wide range of health conditions. It is also safe and effective for individuals who have undergone previous spinal surgeries or have medical conditions that limit their ability to receive traditional chiropractic care.

What to Expect During NUCCA Treatment

Initial Diagnosis

During your consultation with Dr. Desai, the first step will involve discussing your medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle. Next, X-rays of your head and neck will be taken to identify any alignment of the cervical vertebrae.

Specific mathematical measurements are used to determine the nature of your misalignment and whether NUCCA care is the appropriate treatment for its correction.

NUCCA Adjustments

To perform NUCCA adjustments, you will be asked to lie on an adjusting table. Dr. Desai will begin treatment with gentle, non-invasive adjustments to the neck.

The goal is to realign your spinal bones based on your X-rays, using light hand pressure and subtle movements. Since the NUCCA technique uses only gentle adjustments, you will not feel any rapid or jerking motions during this process.

Evaluation

Once the adjustments are completed, Dr. Desai will take another round of X-rays of the treatment area. This will help confirm the precision of the adjustments and also calculate the degree to which the misalignment has been reduced. The bones will continue to move back into place over the next few weeks.

The doctor will also take specific postural and leg length assessments to read the changes. The immediately visible changes in the condition of the misalignment make the NUCCA technique a very effective method of treatment.

Future Sessions

After analyzing your results, Dr. Desai will advise you on further treatment requirements if needed. You will have a follow-up appointment to ensure there is no regression.

The better the initial alignment, the faster you may notice a reduction in your symptoms. Any future adjustments will likely be more minor than the initial ones. And the “NUCCA goal” will be to get your spine to optimal health and for it to stay in alignment with no further adjustments.

NUCCA Case Study

This case study is about a female teenager who came to Dr. Tanvi Desai because she was having a lot of sleepless nights and anxiety. She was not receptive and communicative with her parents or expressing love. She was acting differently than her normal self.

Her parents were concerned about the physical and emotional changes their daughter was experiencing, and they brought her to Dr. Desai.

After a detailed examination, Dr. Desai detected a tilt in her head.

In the above X-ray on the right, the green line is where her head should have been oriented. The yellow vertical line shows how her head was tilting away from the center. The C1 bone was tilting.

The x-ray on the right shows what happened after just a single adjustment. With a single adjustment using the NUCCA technique, Dr. Desai was able to get her head back to neutral. This allowed the C1 to be oriented as it should. This helped facilitate communication between her brain and spine.

After her adjustment, she started sleeping better, and her anxiety subsided. Her abnormal behavior subsided, and she could show and express more emotions. Her attention and focus levels increased.
