Chiropractic Care for Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the space in your spinal canal and can result in back pain, which can be treated with gentle chiropractic care. Spinal stenosis occurs most often in the lower back and neck.

Some people don’t experience any symptoms who have spinal stenosis. Other people experience pain, tingling, muscle weakness, and numbness. For those that experience symptoms,  they tend to get worse with time.

Gentle chiropractic care is one way to treat spinal stenosis and provide you with relief from your symptoms. Dr. Desai will carefully evaluate your situation and create a personal care plan for your spinal stenosis.

What is Spinal Stenosis?

Your spine contains 24 vertebrae stacked on top of each other, which support your body. Your spinal cord, which the vertebrae are attached to, is connected to the spinal canal.

Your spinal cord runs through the spinal canal, which is a narrow channel inside the spine. There are several groups of nerves on the spinal cord that exit the spinal canal through the openings down each side of your vertebrae.

Spinal stenosis occurs when the space inside the backbone is too small. This space may naturally be too small from birth. However, in most cases, the spinal canal is reduced or narrowed due to other causes, such as bone spurs, herniated discs, thickening ligaments, and tumors.

Common Symptoms of Spinal Stenosis

With spinal stenosis, you may not notice any symptoms at first. However, as the narrowing of the spinal canal advances and becomes more severe, your nerves will get compressed, resulting in more noticeable symptoms.

These are common symptoms you may notice as your condition advances:

  • Neck pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Numbness in the buttocks or legs
  • Arm or leg weakness
  • Numbness and tingling in back and extremities
  • Frequent cramping
  • Sciatica

These symptoms generally appear gradually over time. However, some people experience a sudden onset of symptoms. The severity of symptoms varies based on where the narrowing occurs on the spine and how extensive the narrowing is.

Causes of Spinal Stenosis

Anything that changes the spine's structure can narrow the space within the spine. A few of the most common causes are:

  • Spinal injuries: Experiencing physical trauma can result in bone fractures and inflammation near your spine, narrowing the canal spaces and potentially compressing spinal nerves.
  • Congenital spinal stenosis: Some people are born with a small or narrow spinal canal.
  • Bone spurs: Other conditions, such as osteoarthritis, can prompt the growth of bone spurs, which can enter your spinal canal and make it narrow.
  • Tumors:  Any abnormal growth that can form on your spinal cord can compress the space around the spinal canal.
  • Thickening ligaments: Conditions such as arthritis can cause the ligaments of your vertebrae to thicken over time, causing them to invade the spinal canal.

Chiropractic Care for Spinal Stenosis

When it comes to managing spinal stenosis, chiropractic care is one of the most effective, non-invasive ways to manage this condition.

Dr. Desai will use X-rays and other imaging techniques to fully understand your spine's positioning and state. She will use this information to identify any alignment issues. Dr. Desai can refer you for an MRI to confirm the diagnosis.

Once she understands your specific situation, she will develop a care plan for you. This care plan may include manual adjustments or specialized tools to help gently realign your spine. Your care plan may also include decompression therapy, which helps to relieve pressure in the spine.

Spinal decompression therapy is a technique that works really well for treating spinal stenosis. With spinal decompression therapy, the spine is gently stretched to create negative pressure around the discs in your back. This can help release tension in the spinal canal and restore space as well.

Dr. Desai will work with you to ensure your holistic wellness. She will also advise you on personalized exercise routines and physiotherapy options to help maintain your spinal health, muscle strength, and mobility.
