How to Breathe Correctly

As a chiropractor, one of the most common things I see in my patients is poor breathing technique. Many people do not realize that they are not breathing correctly, which can lead to various health problems, including chronic stress and tension in the body.

In this article, I will discuss the correct and incorrect breathing techniques and the benefits of breathing correctly.

Correct Breathing Technique

The correct breathing technique is known as diaphragmatic breathing. This involves breathing deeply into the belly rather than the chest.

To practice diaphragmatic breathing, start sitting or lying in a comfortable position.

  • Place one hand on your chest and the other hand on your belly.
  • Take a deep breath through your nose, allowing your belly to expand.
  • Hold your breath for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth, allowing your belly to deflate.

Repeat this process for several minutes, focusing on breathing deeply into your belly.

Incorrect Breathing Technique

Many people breathe incorrectly, taking shallow breaths into their chest rather than deep breaths into their bellies.

This can lead to chronic stress and tension in the body, as well as various other health problems. Shallow breathing can also result in poor posture, with the shoulders hunched and the neck and upper back tense.

Shallow and quick breathing is only necessary when you need oxygen to be pumped quickly into your blood so that you can run faster in a true fight or flight situation. When you are under stress, your body may respond with quick and shallow breathing, but that isn’t necessary or helpful for your body.

The Effects of Incorrect Breathing

Not breathing correctly can result in holding stress in the body. This can lead to various health problems, including headaches, neck pain, and back pain

When stressed, our bodies produce cortisol, a hormone that can lead to inflammation and other health problems. By breathing correctly, we can reduce cortisol levels in the body, improving health and well-being.

Chiropractic Implications

As a chiropractor, I see firsthand the effects of stress on the body. Stress can cause muscle tension, joint pain, and other health problems.

By teaching my patients correct breathing techniques, I am able to help them reduce stress and tension in their bodies, allowing them to live healthier, more comfortable lives.

The Benefits of Breathing Correctly

Breathing correctly has a variety of benefits for the body and mind. By reducing cortisol levels, we can lower our heart rate and blood pressure, resulting in improved cardiovascular health.

Correct breathing can also improve posture, reducing tension in the neck and upper back. And by helping to reduce stress and tension in the body, correct breathing can improve sleep and your overall health.

Correct breathing technique is essential for good health. By practicing diaphragmatic breathing, we can reduce stress and tension in the body, improve posture, and enjoy a variety of other health benefits.

As a chiropractor, I encourage all of my patients to focus on their breathing and to practice correct breathing techniques every day.
